DETHRO
A little church up in here. Come on.
Dethro is a mental patient currently living in Los Angeles. He started writing music while living in New York and performed on the streets and subways for several years. He remembers playing a song, in 2002, for Devendra Banhart:
"He had just moved from Paris to New York and had 20 songs on a CD. He gave me a copy and there was this cover art of him with devil horns in red ink. My friend Dana, Devendra, and I took some mushrooms and passed the guitar around. I played a song, Sting-rays on hooks they’re bleeding, or something... He kept calling me to hang out with him at an old church he was squatting. I once gave him a copy of my music but he told me there was nothing on the disc. Later i saw him in a cafe and he didn't know who I was. I then became suspicious of that Dave Barns!"
Dethro moved to Los Angeles after "seeing jewels under a floor board." Once in LA, his waning mental state became increasingly worse and by 2008 was brought to the The Gateway Hospital and Mental Health Center. He said he wrote the song "Blossoms Blooming" after an argument with a blind man on a public bus. Story goes, the blind man accused him looking like Michael Jackson. Insulted, Dethro defended himself by calling the blind man John Rotten because, "he smelled like stank old milk." Dethro said he had the entire conversation with the blind man with his eyes closed because then, "they were even!"
